There is a moment in the Maasai Mara when the ground begins to tremble. A distant rumble grows louder. Then, without warning, thousands of wildebeest appear on the horizon — a churning mass of hooves, horns, and instinct — stampeding towards the Mara River in what is undisputedly one of the most breathtaking spectacles in the natural world. This is the Great Wildebeest Migration, and our 4-day Maasai Mara safari is designed to put you right at the centre of it.
Whether you are a first-time safari-goer or a seasoned wildlife enthusiast, this itinerary offers the perfect balance of exhilarating game drives, cultural immersion, and the raw, untamed beauty of Kenya's most iconic reserve.
Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeest — alongside hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles — undertake a circular journey of more than 1,800 kilometres across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. This annual movement follows the rains and is governed entirely by instinct, making it one of the last great wildlife events driven by nature rather than human intervention.
The most dramatic chapter of this journey unfolds between July and October, when the herds cross from Tanzania's Serengeti into Kenya's Maasai Mara. The Mara River crossings — where wildebeest plunge into crocodile-infested waters in a desperate push northward — are the defining moments that wildlife photographers and nature lovers travel from across the globe to witness.
But the migration is more than river crossings. Predator activity surges as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas follow the herds, making the Mara during migration season arguably the best game-viewing destination on the continent.
| Season | Price Per Person |
|---|---|
| Peak Season (July – October) | USD 2,920 |
Price is based on shared accommodation and includes accommodation, meals as specified, game drives, park fees, and ground transport from Nairobi. The optional hot air balloon safari is available at an extra cost and is not included in the package price. Contact us for off-peak rates, private vehicle upgrades, and group pricing.
Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel, residence, or the airport in Nairobi. Our driver will collect you and your group directly, so there is no need to arrange your own transport — simply have your bags ready and we handle everything from there.
From Nairobi, you travel by road through the Great Rift Valley, one of Africa's most dramatic landscapes. The descent into the valley offers sweeping views of escarpments, crater lakes, and open farmland before the terrain gradually gives way to the golden grasslands of the Mara. The drive takes approximately five to six hours, with a scheduled stop en route.
You will arrive at your camp or lodge in time for lunch, a chance to freshen up, settle in, and take in your surroundings. After lunch, you head out for your first afternoon game drive in the reserve. Even on this first outing, the scale of the migration becomes apparent — endless columns of wildebeest stretching across the plains, zebras grazing beside them, and the distant silhouette of acacia trees marking the horizon.
As the sun dips below the Oloololo Escarpment and turns the sky a deep amber, you will understand why the Maasai Mara is considered the jewel of East African safari destinations.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Maasai Mara (lodge or tented camp)
Today is dedicated entirely to the Maasai Mara ecosystem and the wildebeest migration. After an early breakfast, you depart in your 4x4 safari vehicle with your professional guide for a full day in the reserve.
Morning game drives in the Mara are exceptional. Predators are most active at dawn — lions returning from nocturnal hunts, cheetahs scanning the open plains from termite mounds, and leopards draped in the branches of sausage trees. As the herds move, the drama is constant and unpredictable.
Your guide will position you strategically along the Mara River if the herds are building for a crossing. River crossings are not scheduled events — they happen on nature's terms. But when they do occur, they are unforgettable. Thousands of animals hurtle down the embankment into the water while Nile crocodiles, some over four metres long, wait below the surface. Those who make it to the far bank shake themselves off and continue their journey without missing a beat.
Lunch is served in the bush before you continue the afternoon drive tracking predators, birdlife, and the ever-moving herds. As the day closes, you return to camp with stories and photographs that will last a lifetime.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Maasai Mara (lodge or tented camp)
The third day is the most varied of the itinerary, layering an early morning in the sky — for those who choose it — with a guided game drive, a midday meal, and a rich cultural afternoon.
Optional: Hot Air Balloon Safari (Extra cost — not included in package price)
For the ultimate dawn experience, guests who have pre-booked the balloon safari will be woken before first light and transferred to the launch site. As the balloon inflates and lifts off, the Mara plains unfold beneath you — herds of wildebeest stretching to the horizon, elephants moving in single file through the bush, and the Mara River glinting in the early morning light. Drifting silently above it all, with no engine noise and no vehicle, this is the migration seen from a perspective very few ever get to enjoy. The flight lasts approximately one hour and concludes with a traditional champagne breakfast served in the bush — a truly memorable way to start the day. Please note this excursion is not included in the package price and must be booked and paid for separately in advance as space is strictly limited.
Morning Game Drive
After breakfast, you head out for a guided game drive across the Mara plains. The morning light is ideal for photography, and wildlife activity remains high as predators make their final moves before the heat of the day sets in. Your guide will track migration movement, monitor the river for potential crossings, and seek out the predators — lion, cheetah, and leopard — that follow the herds.
Lunch
Return to camp for a midday meal and a brief rest before the afternoon programme begins.
Maasai Village Visit
The afternoon continues with an immersive visit to a traditional Maasai village. The Maasai are one of Kenya's most iconic communities — semi-nomadic pastoralists who have lived alongside wildlife in this landscape for centuries. During the visit, you will be welcomed with traditional song and dance, given a tour of the homestead, and have the opportunity to speak with community members about their way of life, cattle-keeping traditions, and deep relationship with the wildlife that surrounds them. This is an authentic cultural exchange that adds meaningful depth to your safari experience.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Maasai Mara (lodge or tented camp)
After an early breakfast and check-out, you bid farewell to the Maasai Mara and begin the journey back to Nairobi. The drive retraces the scenic route through the Rift Valley, with your driver ensuring a smooth and comfortable return trip.
On arrival in Nairobi, our driver will drop you off directly at the airport, bringing your migration safari to a close. You depart with memories of one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles — and the knowledge that the wildebeest will keep moving long after you have gone.
Meals: Breakfast
While the migration is a year-round phenomenon that spans both Kenya and Tanzania, the Maasai Mara offers unparalleled access and viewing conditions, particularly between July and October. The Mara's open, rolling grasslands allow for long sightlines and outstanding game-viewing from vehicles. The density of resident wildlife — the Big Five are all present year-round — means that even outside peak migration months, a safari here rarely disappoints.
The Mara is also home to some of East Africa's finest safari camps and lodges, ranging from intimate tented camps on private conservancies to luxury riverside lodges with world-class cuisine and guiding.
Best time to visit for the migration: July to October for river crossings; June and November offer excellent sightings as the herds arrive and depart.
What to pack: Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige), a good pair of binoculars, a camera with a zoom lens, sunscreen, and a light jacket for early morning drives.
Accommodation: We work with a curated selection of properties across the Mara ecosystem, from conservancy camps bordering the reserve to lodges inside the national reserve itself.
Health: Consult your doctor about malaria prophylaxis before travel. Most camps provide mosquito nets and repellent.
The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of those rare experiences that exceeds every expectation. Our 4-day itinerary is crafted to give you maximum time in the reserve, expert guiding, and access to both the wildlife and the culture that make the Maasai Mara so extraordinary.
